18 OTT apps 19 website showing obscene content banned india latest update

Taking major action, the Government of India has closed 18 OTT platforms and their related social media accounts. Obscene content was being shown through these. According to PTI report, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has said in a statement that 18 over the top (OTT) platforms, 19 websites, 10 apps and 57 social media accounts associated with them have been blocked in India. 7 blocked apps were present on Google Play Store and 3 apps were present on Apple App Store.

According to the report, after discussions with various government departments/ministries, experts and women and child rights activists, it was decided to take action against OTT platforms. This action has been taken under the provisions of the Information Technology Act 2000.

Why was the tough decision taken?

According to the report, a large part of the content shown on these platforms was found to be obscene and portray women in a derogatory manner. There was a lot of vulgarity in them. Relationships between teachers and students were shown. Wrong family relationships were depicted.

The special thing is that among the OTT apps on which action has been taken, one app had received more than 1 crore downloads. Whereas two apps were downloaded more than 50 lakh times on Google Play Store. To reach out to the people, these apps used to show such scenes on their social media apps, which could attract the audience.
