According to TOI, Communications Minister Devusingh Chauhan, while announcing the success of the initiative in Parliament, said that 55.52 lakh connections were deactivated due to the verification process that identified fake documents. Apart from shutting down connections, 1.32 lakh handsets were also blocked due to their involvement in cyber crime and financial fraud and 13.42 lakh suspicious connections reported by alert citizens were also disconnected.
The minister, while talking about the government's effort to inform and educate consumers about mobile connections registered in their names, said the aim is to empower individuals with knowledge and vigilance, reports state.
The widespread use of fake documents to obtain SIM cards has given rise to criminal activities such as financial fraud, phishing calls and identity theft. Using fake documents like this makes it easier for scammers to hide, making it difficult for law enforcement to trace and apprehend criminals.
