Babiarz, a former analyst at the US Department of Defense Pentagon, has studied satellite images of China's Lop Nur test area for several years. China conducted its first nuclear test in this area in October 1964.

A report by the Middlebury Institute of International Studies states that China's increasing missile power is indicating its move towards nuclear weapons. It had about 50 intercontinental ballistic missiles a little more than a decade ago. It is preparing to increase its number to more than 1,000 missiles in the next few years. About half of these missiles may be with nuclear capable launchers.
