Rising global temperatures are affecting us in different ways. The biggest impact has been felt in the Arctic region, where the ice is melting rapidly. Arctic permafrost, which is a frozen layer on or below the Earth's surface, has also been affected. Its melting has revealed a hidden danger! According to NDTV report, this hidden danger is the huge reserves of methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas. Even scientists do not know what effect it would have if a large amount of methane gas was released into our atmosphere. This is the reason why their concern has increased.

The report says that this is a ticking time bomb on the Arctic soil. Scientists are trying to understand what harm it can cause. During exploration in the Arctic Ocean, scientists discovered a deep methane reservoir close to the surface, which is not a good sign for the Earth.

The place where methane reserves have been found is part of the Norwegian archipelago 'Svalbard'. According to the report, the geological and glacier history of this place is similar to that of the rest of the Arctic. This means that such methane reserves can be found elsewhere in the Arctic as well.

Dr. Thomas Birchall of the University Center in Svalbard, who is associated with this study, says that methane is a powerful greenhouse gas. At present there is little leakage from beneath the permafrost, but as the glaciers retreat and the permafrost expands, we will learn more.

The rise in global temperature has put scientists in trouble. It has been revealed in many researches that the ice of Antarctica is melting rapidly, due to which the sea level may rise around the world. Research also says that the rise in sea level will threaten those cities which are situated near the coasts.
