What is Point Nemo the satellite graveyard where ISS will be go deorbit
What is Point Nemo
Point Nemo is the only place in the world where no one lives. It is also called the 'pole of inaccessibility'. This is a place from where the land area is also 2,700 kilometers away, that too in the form of an island.
Where is Point Nemo
Point Nemo is right in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This is an area in the sea where there is no settlement for thousands of kilometers. This place is about 3000 miles away from New Zealand and 2600 miles away from Argentina. This place has proved to be excellent for the space industry in the last few years. According to a report by Live Science, about 300 retired spacecraft have been landed here since the 1970s.
ISS will also deorbit at Nemo Point
The American Space Agency has told that there is a plan to deorbit the International Space Station at Nemo Point. NASA has set a target to officially close the ISS by the year 2031. The report says that the ISS, 109 meters long and weighing more than 4 lakh kg, will be the largest space junk to be dropped at Nemo Point.
Why was Nemo Point chosen?
Deorbiting spacecraft is a challenging task for space agencies. Care has to be taken to ensure that no one on earth is affected by it. Nemo Point is a place where no one is living. No boats float there. No flights fly over that place.
